How We Used PEP Funds to Create a Creative Tween Homeschool Space

Updated: Jun 17

When we think about learning, we often picture desks, schedules, and a pile of curriculum. But the most powerful learning doesn’t always happen in a rigid environment—it happens in spaces where children feel safe, seen, and inspired.

One of the best things I did for my homeschool was to create a space in our home that reflects who my daughter is and what lights her up. With help from Florida’s PEP scholarship, I was able to purchase the materials and tools to make that space beautiful, functional, and full of possibility.

For us, that meant open shelves with art supplies in reach, cozy corners for reading, and room for sewing, building, journaling, and dreaming. It’s not Pinterest-perfect, but it feels good. And when a space feels good, learning flows more naturally.

Our tween girls especially need this—spaces that aren't childish, but also not just miniature classrooms. They need room to explore their creativity, express themselves, and follow their curiosity without judgment or a ringing bell cutting them off.

When I stopped trying to recreate a school classroom and started asking, “What kind of space invites her to do what she loves?”, everything changed. She started spending more time creating. More time building. More time in deep thought. She’s learning—not because I assigned it, but because the space around her says, “You’re safe to explore here.”

The PEP scholarship helped me provide the materials, but what we’ve built is so much more than that. It’s a space for her to become herself.

If you’re feeling uninspired, start with the environment. What could you shift, simplify, or sprinkle with beauty to spark your child’s joy? Sometimes learning begins with simply giving them space to be.
