How to Legally Homeschool in Florida: Understanding the Letter of Intent (LOI) and Your Options

Making the decision to transition from public school to homeschooling is a big step, and navigating the process can feel overwhelming. One of the most important aspects for Florida parents considering this shift is understanding the different options available for legally homeschooling in the state.

One of the most recommended options for registering as a homeschooler in Florida is sending in your "Letter of Intent" and registering in Florida's Home Education Program. I have gathered some detailed information about this option but please keep in mind, this is only one option you have to fulfill the legal requirements for homeschooling in the state of Florida. If you are withdrawing your child from public school, it’s likely the school makes it seem like this is a must-do, but there ARE other options if you wish to explore them.

Letter of Intent oftentimes abbreviated as -LOI. - This is an actual letter parents submit to their local county home education contact if they wish to register as a homeschooler with their local school district.

Some pros of registering through the local school district:

  • You are free to homeschool however you like with very few requirements.

  • Your student may be eligible for some benefits through the school district, such as band class or speech therapy.

  • It’s an easy process to get registered.

Some cons of registering through your local school district:

  • You are required to keep a portfolio (a scrapbook or memory box of the year) and submit an annual review. This is not a big con, but still, anything extra I need to add to my plate is worth mentioning.

If you're considering homeschooling in Florida, researching the various registration options is a great place to start. With the right information and resources, transitioning to a homeschool environment can be a rewarding and successful experience for both parents and students.
